Some time ago I was asked by my friend Kasia Stefanowicz to create “something” for her PERFORM festival of performative arts and contact improvisation. She was sure I could come up with something interesting. I was I wasn’t so sure myself to be honest, but since I didn’t want to disappoint her I spent a while asking myself one important question:
What is the Best Immersive Experience and How can I Create It?
I realised that the most immersive technology nowadays is virtual reality of course. But the main problem with the virtual world, is that once you put your VR goggles on, you’re totally excluded from the outside world and you no longer have any interaction with it. I wanted to create something truly immersive, but at the same time connecting people. I wanted the audience to feel the energy on stage, and I also want them to participate in it. That is my definition of a truly immersive theatre and a cutting edge digital art. I started exploring recent virtual projection technologies and came up with a new idea for immersive art. I have decided to flip the cutting-edge technology of VR inside out and started using it not as a simulator or a curated exhibition only to be seen through the googles - but rather as a musical instrument anyone can play. And that’s how I was able to merge immersive art experience with the virtual reality experience.
